Actor and fencing expert Britt Lomond died March 22 after a long illness in Huntington Beach, CA. He was 80.
Lomond was best known for his role as Captain Monastario in the 1957 TV series Zorro, which utilized his skills as an accomplished fencer. Lomond was ranked 26th in the U.S. among amateur fencers and qualified to tryout for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. However, he was no longer qualified to compete after turning pro in order to fence in films and on TV.
Lomond appeared on over 30 TV shows, including Perry Mason, I Spy, and Simon & Simon. He also worked behind the camera during the '70s and '80s, serving as assistant director or production manager on features including Purple Rain, Midnight Run, and Somewhere in Time.
He is survived by his wife, former casting agent Diane Lomond, and two children, Glase and Evan.
