Voted upon by members of the Casting Society of America, nominees for the 34th annual Artios Awards have been revealed. Honoring the best of the best in the world of casting since 1985, this year’s Artios ceremony will be a bi-coastal and international affair. On Jan. 31, The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, Stage 48 in New York City, and the British Independent Film Academy’s Emerging Artists Dinner for the European Branch’s first ceremony in London will all host ceremonies.
Nominees in television, theater, and short film were announced Sept. 20; joining them are a handful of worthy feature films including buzzy contenders “A Star Is Born,” “Green Book,” “The Hate U Give,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” Topping the film nominations list are Francine Maisler and associate Amber Wakefield with three: for “Widows,” “Vice,” and “Beautiful Boy.” Recognized for the prestigious Zeitgeist Award are “A Quiet Place,” “Black Panther,” “Bumblebee,” “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” and “Ready Player One.” As Hollywood’s film awards race heats up, it remains to be seen which of these titles will also earn recognition from the upcoming Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Oscars.
In addition to the previously announced Hoyt Bowers Award recipients (Robert J. Ulrich, Eric Dawson, and Carol Kritzer of Ulrich/Dawson/Kritzer Casting), Laura Dern will be receiving this year’s Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement, while Tina Fey and Jeff Richmond will earn the Marion Dougherty New York Apple Award. It was also made known that CSA founders Mike Fenton, Joe Reich, and Al Onorato will accept a special tribute honor. “Grace and Frankie” star June Diane Raphael and “Veep” star Paul Scheer will host the L.A. ceremony.
“We are thrilled to have such an impressive list of honorees lined up on both coasts for our 2019 show,” CSA President Russell Boast said in a statement released to media publications. “It has been a stellar year for the art and craft of casting, and we look forward to celebrating our peers’ successes and honoring our organizations founding forefathers.”
In London, CD Lucinda Syson (“Wonder Woman,” “Blade Runner,” “Mission Impossible”) will be awarded an Artios Award for excellence in casting. Legendary producer Barbara Broccoli, best known for her work on the James Bond film franchise, will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award. Head of CSA Europe Nancy Bishop said in a statement, “We’re honored to be working with BIFA to make these awards possible in Europe, as well as the United States, and we see it as part of CSA’s growing international presence.”
CSA is made up of more than 800 casting directors and associates, working to create a standard for work in the casting profession. For resources and more information, visit www.castingsociety.com, where a full list of 2019 Artios nominees is forthcoming.
