A glamour model is a model with an attractive face and an equally attractive physique. In glamour modeling, the emphasis is on the model’s beauty and desirable body rather than a specific product.

While most glamour models tend to be women, there are opportunities for men. Some publications often feature male glamour models in their magazines, calendars, and posters. Men who want to become glamour models should work on improving their fitness levels to take advantage of available or emerging modeling opportunities.

Glam modeling typically puts an emphasis on showcasing the model’s sexual appeal. It also typically involves doing photo shoots for commercial use, such as calendars, men’s magazines, posters, and advertisements.

Glam modeling differs from promotional modeling or fitness modeling because of its emphasis on “selling” the model and making them appealing. Thus, a glamour model should have a lot of confidence, since they need to be seductive and comfortable with the prospect of showing off their body in swimsuits or lingerie.

Glamour models pose for a variety of publications, including men’s magazines, swimsuit calendars, and advertisements, with a focus on showcasing the model’s sensuality more than the accessories or clothes that they’re wearing. Most of the photo shoots glamour models do include bikini, swimsuit, and lingerie modeling.

There are no height or size requirements for glamour models. However, they do need to have an attractive face, a curvy and toned body, and voluminous hair. Additionally, one of the glamour modeling requirements is that the model must be over 18 years old.

Like other modeling types, a glamour model should be professional, hardworking, and punctual. A glamour model should also be motivated, outgoing, and know how to take direction well.

How to start glamour modeling

  1. Do your research: Stay on top of trends, practice your poses, and ensure that you understand the glamour modeling industry intimately. 
  2. Take care of your face and body: Since your work will entail showcasing your face and body, it’s important to take good care of yourself. Maintain a healthy diet and a good skincare and haircare routine, and exercise regularly.
  3. Confidence is key: Work on your self-confidence since glam modeling involves showing off your body. 
  4. Learn how to pose: Mastering the art of the pose is key to success in the glam modeling realm. Practice different poses in front of the mirror and on camera to see which angles work well for your features and body type.
  5. Create a professional portfolio: Have photos taken by a professional photographer. Be sure to include an array of poses that highlight your unique look. Once you have your modeling portfolio, you can distribute it to reputable agencies. 
  6. Look into working with a modeling agency: Modeling agencies can help you look for and book jobs, negotiate contracts, and determine the price of your photo shoots. They can also help protect you from legal issues and scams.
  7. Or try freelance modeling: If you want a more DIY approach to glam modeling, you can try looking into becoming a freelance glamour model. This means you work independently without the help of an agency, so you will need to look for clients and contacts yourself. 
  8. Ace your go-see: If you’re called in for a go-see, highlight your natural features by keeping your makeup minimal and clothing simple. You’ll have the chance to show off glitz and glam if they choose you for the shoot.
  9. Protect yourself: Your personal safety should be your number one concern. Only work with reputable clients, and never go to a meeting or photo shoot solo. Before starting a photo shoot, carefully go over your contract to understand the conditions and what the client expects from you. If you find that you’re unsatisfied with the terms, don’t sign the contract. If you’re about to start a job and you’re not given a contract, make sure you ask for one as this can help protect you in case things don’t work out the way they’re supposed to.

Is nudity required to be a glamour model?

While some glamour models do nude shoots, it’s not mandatory. Glamour models who are more open when it comes to showing skin tend to get more work. However, you can always say no to doing a project that you’re not comfortable with. As a model, you have a say in determining how comfortable you may or may not be when showing your skin. One of the best ways to protect yourself and your interests is by working with an agency that can set boundaries on your behalf and get jobs that align with your goals and comfort zone.

How much does a glamour model make?

According to ZipRecruiter, a glamour model in the United States can make more than $60,000 annually. Annual salaries can range from $13,000 to as high as over $200,000. Generally, average annual salaries are between $25,000 and close to $60,000, with top earners raking in as much as $130,000 annually.

Some of the most renowned glamour models include:

  • Lucy Pinder: Since being discovered in 2003 while sunbathing on Bournemouth Beach, Pinder has carved a name for herself in the glamour modeling industry. She has appeared in many publications, including FHM and the Daily Star.
  • Katie Price: Media personality Price rose to stardom in the 1990s for her work as a glamour model. She appeared in Playboy, The Sun, and the Daily Star, back when she was known as “Jordan,” and was even runner-up for the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest. 
  • Lauren Pope: Model and TV personality Pope’s road to glamour modeling stardom started when she appeared on the British reality TV series “The Only Way Is Essex.” She has also appeared in FHM and in a Calvin Harris music video.
