Oscar and Emmy nominee Colin Farrell is back as private investigator John Sugar on Season 2 of Apple TV’s neo-noir drama “Sugar.” The eight-episode season premieres on June 19, with weekly releases on Fridays until the finale on Aug. 7. Farrell also executive produces the series, which brings John Sugar back to Los Angeles for another missing person’s case.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Farrell explained that the show’s use of Los Angeles as a character made him want to come back for another season. “Most shows and most films, some that are even set here, take place elsewhere. So, to shoot on the streets of LA and have it as a character in [the show] was something that drew me back and got me just as excited about the second year as I was about the first [season].”

Apple describes “Sugar” as “a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture and television history: the private detective story.”
Season 2 follows John Sugar as he takes on a new case involving the troubled older brother of a local boxer, while continuing his search for his missing sister. As the investigation becomes a sinister, citywide conspiracy, Sugar must determine how far he is willing to go to do what’s right.
At Apple TV’s press day, Farrell told fans to expect more conflicts on Season 2. “Sugar gets involved in violence. That’s one of the things that he questions about himself, particularly. The questioning is pretty heavy this season, but evermore, he just believes in the fundamental decency of human beings,” Farrell told the Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know that I share that belief all the time. I touch it sometimes, but to play a character that even if he’s shaky in that belief, that belief is always there, even if he questions his own goodness, his belief in the potential decency of humanity is always really front and center. And that’s a lovely, lovely character without, I hope, him being vanilla and just going around high-fiving everyone he knows. He knows life is tough, but he believes in the decency of human beings, and that’s OK.”
