Hilary Duff is returning to the small screen as she’s just been cast as the lead for “Pretty Ugly,” a new drama series from Hulu and 20th Television. The single-camera series is being billed as a dark comedy based on Kirker Butler’s 2015 novel of the same name. Butler, whose Emmy-nominated work includes “Family Guy,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “The Cleveland Show,” is writing and executive producing the new series. While we wait for more details about production and casting calls, here’s what we know so far about “Pretty Ugly.”

What is “Pretty Ugly” about?

Miranda Miller (Duff) is a former teenage pageant queen with big dreams for her 10-year-old daughter, Bailey, to follow in her footsteps. But Bailey, who’s been competing in pageants since she was a baby, isn’t interested in being a child star. Then there’s the issue of Miranda’s husband, Ray, a pill-popping hospice nurse who impregnates the 18-year-old granddaughter of one of his patients, and Miranda’s mother, Joan, a widowed recluse who’s plotting a murder.

Who is in the cast of “Pretty Ugly”?

Duff will star in the leading role as Miranda Miller. Casting details for Miranda’s daughter Bailey, husband Ray, and supporting roles have not yet been announced.

Who is developing “Pretty Ugly”?

Silver Tree (“You,” “Shameless,” “Dead to Me”) is directing and executive producing. Duff is also an executive producer for the series, along with Butler and Aaron Kaplan, who’s producing for his company, Kapital Entertainment.
