Forget shadows in the woods or bumps in the night—Netflix is taking terror to the open ocean with the thriller “Below.” Josh Hartnett stars as a fisherman navigating the freezing North Atlantic to protect his family and the community of Snooks Arm from a mysterious sea creature.
The cast also features Mackenzie Davis (“Station Eleven”) and “Stranger Things” alum Charlie Heaton. Created by “The Umbrella Academy” writer Jesse McKeown—who also serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer—the six-episode limited series premieres Oct. 8 on Netflix.

Netflix’s “Below” follows Calvin Penney (Hartnett), a fisherman and single father of three, who is already drowning under the weight of his father’s mysterious death years prior. But life in his remote Newfoundland town takes an even darker turn when a sea monster begins attacking the community. After his son Wade (Heaton) starts exhibiting strange symptoms, Calvin turns to visiting marine biologist Fonda Howander (Davis) for the answers he needs to stop the creature threatening to drag them all below.
McKeown wanted to build a story around Newfoundland long before “Below” came together. “I just always felt like I wanted to set something here, that this would be a great place for something big and something kind of epic,” he told Tudum.
