An unconventional sports drama is A24’s latest serve. Set to hit theaters on Dec. 25, “Marty Supreme” stars Timothée Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as an eclectic ensemble cast that includes Odessa A’zion (“Hellraiser”), Fran Drescher (“The Nanny”), Kevin O’Leary (“Shark Tank”), and musician Tyler, the Creator. Josh Safdie, best known for the indie projects “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time,” directed the film, which depicts the competitive ping-pong scene of the 1950s.

Before the movie bounces into theaters on Christmas Day, here’s a quick look at everything we know about “Marty Supreme.”

What is “Marty Supreme” about?

Set in the 1950s, “Marty Supreme” tells the story of Marty Mauser (Chalamet), an ambitious professional ping-pong player who’s determined to popularize the game into a spectator sport. Facing resistance from concerned loved ones and skeptical businessmen who are hesitant to back him, Marty must convince them to support his dream of becoming a great ping-pong star.

The official teaser trailer shared by A24 also hints at a love triangle between Marty, his partner (A’zion), and a glamorous actor (Paltrow) he meets by chance in a swanky hotel. Although the movie is being promoted as fiction and not a biopic, the story is rumored to be loosely based on the life of professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman, who won multiple championship titles in the ’50s and ’60s.
