The Peabody Awards announced their 60 nominees today for “the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and digital media during 2019.” Recognizing creators in television, documentary, news media, and more, the Peabodys honor storytelling quality over popularity or commercial success, with an emphasis on issues such as criminal justice, the #MeToo movement, and more. Nominations are selected unanimously by a distinguished jury.
Among this year’s honorees are the TV series “Chernobyl,” “Fleabag,” “Stranger Things,” “Succession,” and “When They See Us,” all previous Emmy Award winners. Upcoming Emmy contenders “Watchmen,” “Unbelievable,” and “Dickinson” were also nominated in the Peabodys’ entertainment category.
How ‘Stranger Things’ Got Made “Peabody is proud to champion this year’s nominees who inspire our connection, provoke our thinking and delight our senses,” said Executive Director Jeffrey P. Jones in a statement. “From the communal strength of black women to the eminence of science to the conviction of those who speak up, these stories and their creators celebrate the diversity of human experience and of our democracy. Amidst the challenges of our present moment, we can find empathy, entertainment and truth in these nominees.”
Founded in 1940 at the University of Georgia and based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the Peabody Awards announced earlier this year their 2020 ceremony would take place for the first time in Los Angeles, on June 18. The event has been postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, 30 Peabody winners will be announced at a later date.
