Tyler Perry is keeping viewers on the edge of their seats with one of his latest Netflix series “Beauty in Black.” The hit drama, which premiered part one of Season 2 on Sept. 11, boasts a strong cast including regular Perry collaborators Taylor Polidore Williams, Crystle Stewart, and Amber Reign Smith. Spoilers ahead: “Beauty in Black” follows two women, Kimmie and Mallory, whose paths intersect when Kimmie, an exotic dancer, decides she wants to pursue a more reputable career path. Mallory, owner of the titular hair-care company and part of the powerful Bellarie family, brings Kimmie into the fold, where she quickly becomes enveloped in Bellarie family drama. Part of the Bellarie family runs the Beauty in Black company, while the other part operates the club where Kimmie worked—a place that serves as their cover for illegal trafficking. Determined to find her strength and her power, Kimmie fights back against the forces that held her back, rising in the ranks as she prepares to marry the family’s dying patriarch and inherit all that his children expected to gain in his absence. Now in a position of power that rivals Mallory, Kimmie and her former idol must determine whether they will proceed as allies or enemies in a world where they both have the upper hand.
Kim Coleman (“Forever,” “Dear White People”) is the main casting director for Netflix’s “Beauty in Black.” As someone who often brings novels and biographies to the screen, Coleman advises actors to prepare for their big break before it arrives by focusing on performance and training to hone their talent.
