Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in 1927 for Universal Pictures. The character starred in 27 Walt Disney Studio shorts before Universal Pictures acquired it. According to Variety, bringing Oswald back was a priority for Disney CEO Bob Iger, and The Walt Disney Company reacquired the rights in 2006. Since then, Oswald has reappeared in Disney Parks, on merchandise, and as a lead character in the “Epic Mickey” video games.
The upcoming Disney+ series will reintroduce Oswald “in a blend of animation and live action, bringing his mischievous attitude and self-absorbed antics to modern audiences.”
Further details about the show remain under wraps, but Disney has described Oswald as a “saucy, self-absorbed bunny.”
