Set to debut via Netflix on Oct. 9, “Boots,” the eight-episode comedy, draws its inspiration from U.S. Marine Greg Cope White’s memoir, “The Pink Marine.” Creator Andy Parker (“Pantheon”) serves as co-showrunner alongside Jennifer Cecil (“One Tree Hill”), with the late Norman Lear (“All in the Family”) having served as executive producer. Unlike the usual coming-of-age story, “Boots” follows the experience of a gay recruit in the ’90s U.S. Marine Corps at a time when said sexual orientation was still prohibited in the Armed Forces. Miles Heizer stars as Cameron Cope, the main character, while Liam Oh starts as Ray McAffey, Cameron’s best friend and fellow recruit. Vera Farmiga also stars as Cameron’s mother, Barbara. After living with his less-than-stable mom, Barbara, for his whole life, secretly gay teen Cameron Cope and his straight best friend Ray McAffey enlist in the Marines. While Ray’s family has a history with the Armed Forces, as his father was a decorated Marine, Cameron must remain closeted during a time when gay men weren’t allowed to serve. Despite the legality of Cameron’s presence looming in the background, these young men forge strong friendships with their fellow recruits as they endure the challenges of boot camp together, ultimately discovering their true selves in the process.
