On the heels of film awards season now come the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) TV nominations, recognising the best of UK and international talent on the small screen. Writer-director Steve McQueen’s critically acclaimed series Small Axe dominated the list with a leading 15 total nods.
The anthology series from BBC and Amazon, consisting of five films centered on West Indian immigrants in 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s London, is in contention for BAFTA’s best miniseries prize as well as several acting categories: John Boyega, Shaun Parkes, Letitia Wright, Malachi Kirby, and Micheal Ward. Also among the miniseries contenders are Normal People and its leads Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones, Adult Material and its stars Hayley Squires, Rupert Everett, and Siena Kelly, and I May Destroy You, the latter earning eight total nods including for stars Michaela Coel, Paapa Essiedu, and Weruche Opia.
The Crown, Peter Morgan’s hit drama from Netflix, continued its awards season reign with 10 nods from BAFTA, including for stars Josh O’Connor, Tobias Menzies, and Helena Bonham Carter. It will compete in the best drama race alongside Gangs of London, I Hate Suzie, and Save Me Too, all from Sky Atlantic.
In the best scripted comedy category, Ghosts, Inside No. 9, Man Like Mobeen, and This Country are nominated. Sex Education stars Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee Lou Wood, and Emma Mackey, and This Country actors Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper are among the comedy acting nominees.
This year’s Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards ceremony will take place on 6 June, with the separate British Academy Television Craft Awards streaming on BAFTA’s social channels 24 May. To read more about BAFTA, click here.
