Gimme, gimme more! Universal Pictures is currently working on a Britney Spears biopic, with Jon M. Chu signed on to direct and Marc Platt set to produce. Rumors about a biopic began circulating after Spears’ very public 13-year conservatorship came to an end in 2021 (who doesn’t remember the #FreeBritney movement?). Following the ruling, the “Toxic” singer opened up about her life struggles in her 2023 bestselling memoir, “The Woman in Me.” Universal has since acquired the rights to the memoir for the upcoming biopic.
Here’s everything we know about the Britney Spears film, including who’s attached to the project so far.

According to Variety, the biopic will go into detail about Spears’ life, highlighting sensitive topics like her mental health struggles, conservatorship, and intimate relationships. It will also look at the intense media scrutiny and legal struggles that the singer has experienced throughout the journey to reclaim her life. Like her memoir, it will take us through Spears’ early childhood to the peak of her pop star career.
After the success of his Oscar-winning adaptation of the musical “Wicked,” Chu is slated to direct the biopic, with Platt, producer of “La La Land,” developing the film. Spears will also be a part of the production, as reported by Vogue.
The singer shared her excitement for the biopic on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned.”
At this time, no official information regarding casting has been released to the public. As for rumors, people have started to act like a circus for who they think should play the iconic pop star. Fans have compared actresses and singers such as Sabrina Carpenter, Sydney Sweeney, Dove Cameron, and Millie Bobby Brown for the lead role. While Cameron shut down the rumors, Brown expressed interest in playing Spears on “The Drew Barrymore Show” in 2022. Unfortunately, Chu silenced all casting rumors via X (formerly Twitter) in March 2025.
Of course, there are still more roles to fill than just the Princess of Pop, and it begs the question: Who will play Spears’ family members, including her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears? As for romantic partners like Justin Timberlake, people have shown interest in Gavin Casalegno, known for his role in “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” and Drew Starkey, known for his roles in “Queer” and “Love, Simon.”
It’s still too early in the biopic’s development cycle for casting notices. However, this hasn’t stopped some people from making casting call-inspired content on TikTok, like this creator. Those interested in auditioning should get prepared for the announcement that is bound to be here soon.
