What makes a good demo reel?

Every strong demo reel will include:

  • The name of the actor and their headshot
  • Clear, high-res footage that shows off an actor’s skills, without being too long or meandering
  • Some way to get in touch with the performer, whether it’s a personal contact or via their representation

Examples of great demo reels

Here are nine demo reels that go above and beyond in one way or another, helping each performer stand out.

1. Juliette Angelo

Apart from hitting all the necessary criteria, what Angelo does especially well with this reel is show off her range—not just in her performances but across several different mediums, from daytime procedurals to multicamera sitcoms. Actors should take note: Showcasing this level of variety in your reel helps casting directors feel confident that you can excel in any setting.

2. Natasha Arancini

The first clip of Arancini’s demo reel grabs your attention immediately—with a shouted expletive and an admittedly hilarious chase involving a missing shoe—before cutting to more conventional clips. While starting with your most out-there clip might be a risky move depending on how you want to be perceived by the industry, if you feel it represents you authentically, that hook might be just what you need to keep CD’s eyes glued to the screen (it sure held our interest!).

3. Beth Felice

With her demo reel clocking in at just under three minutes, Felice makes the most of the time she’s given. She showcases herself in every clip she presents (over a dozen) without too much external time given to other characters’ lines or any additional, unnecessary context. She begins and ends her reel with a headshot and contact info, too, which is essential—you don’t want that information being separated from your reel if it’s downloaded, so make sure it’s part of the video and not just in a description.

4. Julia Fernandez

Sometimes, less is more. In a world where searching for actor reels can summon dozens of videos with runtimes of minutes or more, a shorter reel like Fernandez’s suddenly seems like a breath of fresh air. The performer manages to pack four clips into a one-minute reel, each showing a different part of her acting skills. Approachable runtimes ensure that casting teams can easily make it through your video without running the risk of viewers getting bored halfway through and turning it off.

5. Christine Horn

This is a perfect example of a classic, clean, and concise reel; it’s not obscured by any unusual transitions or unnecessary information. We’re only given the essentials: actor’s name, a headshot, and the project titles listed on the video’s lower right-hand corner. Though not always necessary, we also love that she’s added chapter markers on the YouTube upload, which allows viewers to find the exact clip they’re looking for without having to scrub around.

6. Stefan Johnson

TikTok fans might recognize Stefan Johnson from his popular “Snack Daddy” food videos, but he’s also the proud owner of a pretty great reel. It has a relatively short runtime compared to others on this list (about one minute and 45 seconds), but it doesn’t feel rushed at all; instead, it shows his range and booming baritone effectively. Johnson is a reminder that even if you find yourself primarily working in one medium, it doesn’t mean you should box yourself in or neglect your other talents: He has a spectacular screen reel, sure, but scroll down to the video description and you’ll find that he’s primarily a voice actor.

7. Aniela McGuinness

Comedy-specific demo reels are hard to pull off. Show too much context and the reel feels meandering and more about the scene than it is about you; don’t give enough context and it’s hard to tell if you’re funny at all. McGuinness strikes that balance in a video that’s both funny and to the point.

8. Paul A. Rose Jr.

Rose’s reel is successful because of its strong sense of identity. From the beginning, viewers understand what kind of actor Rose is and how you might cast him. That, of course, stems from Paul’s understanding of himself as a performer; he calls the video a “character actor demo reel” in the description. He also credits his scene partners which, while not necessary, feels like a classy addition.

9. Shaune Sterling

In this reel’s description, Sterling mentions that every scene featured is from an indie film—and that’s exactly what we like about it. It proves the point that we’ve been preaching for years: You don’t need major film credits to create a reel that is professional, polished, and enticing.
