Based on the “Leaphorn & Chee” novels by Tony Hillerman, “Dark Winds,” the psychological thriller series, was created by Graham Roland with executive producers including “Game of Thrones” writer George R.R. Martin and the late Robert Redford. The series premiered on AMC in 2022 and will soon embark on its fourth season, which debuts on the network and its streaming platform on Feb. 15.
“Dark Winds” features a predominantly indigenous cast, with Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon, and Jessica Matten leading the ensemble as a group of Navajo tribal police officers in the 1970s. While the series’ storylines might be entrenched in mystery, there’s no mistaking this show’s success, as it boasts a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Set amid the Navajo Nation in the 1970s, “Dark Winds” follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn (McClarnon), Deputy Jim Chee (Gordon), and Sgt. Bernadette Manuelito (Matten), tribal officers who investigate murders and crimes on indigenous lands. Beginning with a double murder, the officers find they might be dealing with powers of the supernatural variety, blending elements of the traditional psychological thriller with the spirituality of the indigenous peoples.
