It would have proven pretty difficult for Ruby Vadiveloo not to feel joy while working on her recent gig, “The Polar Express.” Playing a baker in an interactive production of the Christmas classic for kids and adults alike, part of her role was to bake cookies and hand out hot chocolate.
“It was so wonderful to see the kids board the train and have their eyes fill with wonder as their favorite Christmas story came to life,” says Vadiveloo. “It was a lot of fun creating characters that the kids could really connect and engage with, instead of just observing.”
The audition was seemingly intent on spreading joy, as well. “The callback involved memorizing a page of ‘The Polar Express’ book and sharing it with the other auditionees in the room,” she recalls. “It was a great way to break the ice—excuse the pun—and really let your imagination run wild.”
Vadiveloo booked the merry role through Backstage, which she has come to depend on, particularly because of its accessibility. “[It’s] laid out in a really clear, easy-to-use format,” she explains. “I can quickly work out if something is right for me, and the submission process is great.”
