Southern California Theater Guide

Article Image

Raise your hand if you think Southern California is the film and TV capital of the world. Now raise your hand if you think the area is also home to a huge, serious, skilled, creative theater scene. Oh, yes, you’d certainly be right the second time.

The Southland boasts year-round stage productions, where actors of all levels meet, collaborate, and mount amazing numbers of remarkable productions. From spectacular touring productions to 30-seat shows of heartbreaking beauty and profound intelligence, the stage world is rich, deep, and at a theater near you.

Here at Back Stage we’ve been doing our small part to support theater with this annual guide, an indispensable listing of brick-and-mortar theaters, theater companies, and production services for the theater professional: playwrights and composers, directors, designers, and actors.

Feel free to keep this guide with you—in your car or on your laptop. Don’t hesitate to drop by to see a show at one of these locales or, better yet, join one or more of these theatermaking entities now.

If you notice that anything is missing or incorrect in these listings, please let us know so we can get it right next time. And keep us posted about moves, closures, expansions, hires, upstarts—and, of course, your opening nights.

We’ll see you at the theater.

Compiled by Laura Butler, Jessica Gardner, and Les Spindle

Independent Theater Companies
These companies either tour, rent space as needed, or are in temporary residence at a specific theater named in parentheses. As such, they are typically not the folks to call about rentals.
Submitting manuscripts to theatrical companies: Before sending a manuscript to a theatrical company, writers should send a query composed of a synopsis, cast breakdown, a few pages of sample dialogue, the playwright’s résumé, and information about if or when and where the play has been performed. Include a SASE.
