Broadway’s biggest night is here! Hosted by Tony winner Cynthia Erivo (“The Color Purple”) at Radio City Music Hall on June 8, the 78th Annual Tony Awards ceremony honored the most outstanding theatrical productions, performances, and creative work of the 2024–2025 Broadway season.
Hue Park and Will Aronson’s robot romance “Maybe Happy Ending” came out on top with six Tony Awards, including the coveted best musical award. It also won best book, original score, direction, scenic design, and performance by an actor (Darren Criss) in a leading role in a musical. The award for best play went to Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ epic family drama “Purpose,” with Kara Young winning best performance by an actress in a featured role in a play—and making history as the first Black performer to win back-to-back Tony Awards.
Nicole Scherzinger won best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical for “Sunset Blvd.,” Sarah Snook best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play for “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” and Cole Escola best performance by an actor in a leading role in a play for “Oh, Mary!”
The night’s entertainment featured live performances from all five best musical nominees and all four best musical revival nominees, as well as a special performance by the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton” to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical.
Other iconic moments from the ceremony include Jak Malone referencing the “glorious technicolor” nonbinary world, Francis Jue thanking the “generations of wonderful Asian artists who came before,” and Oprah Winfrey and Erivo hilariously recreating the “Wicked” tour’s “holding space” finger-hold moment.
