In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast features in-depth conversations with today’s most noteworthy actors and creators. Join host and senior editor Vinnie Mancuso for this guide to living the creative life from those who are doing it every day.
Vincent D’Onofrio knows a thing or two about career longevity. He’s been one of Hollywood’s go-to character actors since his 1987 breakout role in Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket” and all the way through highlights like embodying Edgar the bug alien in “Men in Black,” playing 10 seasons as Detective Robert Goren on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” and taking residency as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s kingpin of crime Wilson Fisk. (He recently reprised the latter role for the Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again” and is in production on Season 2 as we speak.)
As reliable a performer as D’Onofrio is, his main piece of advice for aspiring actors has nothing to do with the craft itself.
“Fill yourself with art. It’s so much better to become an artist before you’re an actor than an artist because you’re an actor,” he tells us. “You’re gonna be ahead of so many people when it comes to storytelling, blocking scenes, knowing literature, being able to imagine a sculpture or a painting that you loved once. This kind of stuff is vital.”
On this episode of In the Envelope: The Actor’s Podcast, D’Onofrio describes the complex shooting on “Daredevil: Born Again” Season 2, digs into living the life of an artist, and reveals the many techniques he uses to create memorable characters.
