There’s something about Boston that churns out Oscar winners like Dunkin’ churns out coffee. Maybe it’s the gritty authenticity that comes from surviving those harsh New England winters, or perhaps it’s the intellectual energy radiating from Harvard Yard. Here are some of the most famous actors from Beantown and the greater Boston area.

1. Matt Damon

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Damon rose to acting fame co-writing and starring in “Good Will Hunting” in 1997, earning him an Oscar for best original screenplay. After nearly completing his education at Harvard, he went on to star in top hits like the “Bourne” series, “The Martian,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “The Departed,” and more recently, “Oppenheimer.” As the holder of an Academy Award, a Golden Globe (2016 for “The Martian”), and a SAG Award (2024 for “Oppenheimer”), Damon has cemented his status as one of Boston’s best.

2. Ben Affleck

Though he was born in Berkeley, California, Affleck was raised in Cambridge, just outside of Boston. Like Damon (his long-time friend since childhood), Affleck rose to fame with their co-written and costarring roles in 1997’s “Good Will Hunting,” for which he won an Oscar for best original screenplay. Since then, he has starred in countless blockbusters, such as “Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Argo” (which he also directed and won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for best director and an Academy Award for best picture), “Gone Girl,” “Batman v Superman,” “The Town,” “The Way Back,” and “The Last Duel.” Affleck is a highly decorated actor and director, having won two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs, two Golden Globes, and two SAG Awards in his career thus far.

3. Mark Wahlberg

Boston-born Wahlberg, formerly known as rapper “Marky Mark,” found his way to onscreen fame through his acting roles in movies like “Boogie Nights,” “The Departed,” “The Fighter,” and “Ted.” He’s been nominated for two Golden Globes and two Oscars (best motion picture in 2011 for “The Fighter” and best supporting actor in 2007 for “The Departed”).
