“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is the longest-running live-action sitcom in American TV history, and after nearly two decades on air, it’s still going strong. The FXX series returned for its 17th season on July 9 with back-to-back episodes (that stream on Hulu the next day).

Created by Rob Mac (formerly known as Rob McElhenney) with Glenn Howerton as co-developer and Charlie Day as a longtime executive producer, the series follows five self-absorbed, dysfunctional individuals (“The Gang”) who run a dive bar in South Philly. Every episode pushes the boundaries as they pursue increasingly outrageous and morally questionable schemes.
The new season leans into sitcom crossovers, reality TV satire, and the same unfiltered humor that’s fueled the series since 2005. Highlights include Frank (Danny DeVito) starring in a parody of “The Golden Bachelor” and a crossover with ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” told entirely from the Gang’s chaotic point of view. In December 2020, “It’s Always Sunny” was renewed for Seasons 16–18. While Season 17 is currently airing, DeVito told Collider that production for Season 18 is expected to “start at the end of January.” So, it’s likely we’ll see casting notices for “It’s Always Sunny” pop up in the new year.
