The critics and their favorites stepped out in their finest Jan. 13 at the 24th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, broadcasted live on The CW from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Hosted by Taye Diggs and presented by both the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA, the largest film critics organization in the United States and Canada) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), 2018’s worthiest film and television was celebrated, paving the way for the next phase of awards season.

Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” the story of a Mexican domestic worker based in part on the filmmaker’s own childhood, took home the most overall awards with four, including BFCA’s top prize for best picture. Echoing the recent Golden Globe results, Cuarón earned the award for best director. Disney’s “Black Panther” and Annapurna Pictures’ “Vice” each earned three trophies, the latter including leading actor Christian Bale.

Regina King of Annapurna’s “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Mahershala Ali of Universal Pictures’ “Green Book” took home the supporting actor prizes, while Elsie Fisher of A24’s “Eighth Grade” earned the award for best young actor. For the year’s best acting ensemble, the critics went with Fox Searchlight’s “The Favourite.”

Further heating up this season’s Oscar race was the historic tie in the leading film actress category: Glenn Close of Sony Pictures Classics’ “The Wife” and Lady Gaga of Warner Brothers’ “A Star Is Born” jointly shared the prize. And in another twist, another tie resulted in the actress in a limited series category: Amy Adams for HBO’s “Sharp Objects” and Patricia Arquette for Showtime’s “Escape at Dannemora.” After announcing Arquette’s name, Adams said in her speech, “I actually can’t think of a more beautiful thing than a tie, because there really isn’t a winner when we get to do such great work and we have such wonderful opportunities.”

Overall in the TV races, HBO, Netflix, and FX each received five awards. FX’s “The Americans” completed its impressive sweep of multiple accolades for its final season, winning best drama and best actor for Matthew Rhys. Sandra Oh for BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” Thandie Newton for HBO’s “Westworld,” and Noah Emmerich for “The Americans” completed the drama category wins.

Repeating the results of the 2018 Emmys, the BTJA selected Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for best comedy series and both its stars Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, actors Bill Hader and Henry Winkler of HBO’s “Barry,” and FX’s “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” and its leading actor Darren Criss for limited series. Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman,” meanwhile, took home the critics’ prize for animated series.
