Based on Liz Moore’s bestselling 2024 novel, Netflix’s “The God of the Woods” will see Moore team up with screenwriter Liz Hannah (“Mindhunter,” “The Dropout”) to bring her vision to life onscreen. The two will serve as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers on the project. This marks Moore’s second major adaptation following the Peacock production of “Long Bright River” starring Amanda Seyfried.
The mystery-thriller is set in the Adirondack Mountains, with Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) slated to lead the show as investigator Judy Luptack. Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) will costar as distraught mother and unhappy wife Alice Van Laar. Additional cast members have not yet been announced, but with production set to begin this summer, details are bound to reveal themselves—much like the secrets hidden within this twisted tale. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming adaptation, including casting opportunities.

The story follows the wealthy Van Laar family amid an unexpected tragedy that echoes another horrific loss they endured. As the owners of a popular summer camp, the family implodes when their daughter, 13-year-old Barbara, goes missing just like her brother did 14 years earlier.
Set in 1975, the town begins its search for the young girl, with Judy Luptack (Hawke), the first woman investigator in the male-dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation, leading the charge. Yet, while finding Barbara remains the primary objective, Judy soon uncovers secrets about both the Van Laars and the townspeople they employ, shining a light on the family’s crumbling privilege and weakened power.
In December 2025, Netflix announced its adaptation of “The God of the Woods.” At this time, there doesn’t appear to be a casting director attached to the project; however, it’s rumored to begin filming in New York in June 2026.
For one Netflix series lead, starting as a casting intern was the perfect way to break into the business. Here’s how Karrie Martin scored her starring role.
