Trying different things is not only fun but an essential practice to get a variety of skills in your toolbox! As a Backstage subscriber for the last six months, actor J.R. Yussuf learned this firsthand after booking a commercial for MPWR Skincare and Web series “Solid 8.”
“In the commercial I played an intellectual vegan talking about how skin care starts with what you put in your body and how [MPWR’s] refusal to use inorganic chemicals is in line with my lifestyle,” Yussuf explains. “[In ‘Solid 8’], I played a brassy PA mismanaging a film set from hell—lots of fun.”
Looking ahead, Yussuf hopes to continue landing a diverse slate of roles, but also wants to focus on his natural strengths to get the roles that appeal to him most. “There is a wide range of projects on Backstage… there’s a lot of possibility in that,” he says. “Now that I understand my type, I am on the lookout for roles that call for a gay, snarky assistant, a trendy downtown bartender, or something to that effect—but I keep an open mind.”
