An eye model is exactly what it sounds like: a model who allows their eyes to be photographed for merchandising or informational purposes. They’re commercial models, meaning that they model on a contract basis for a variety of brands; they’re also parts models, or models that focus on specific areas such as hair, teeth, lips, legs, feet, hair, and, of course, eyes.
What does an eye model do?
Eye models pose for images and videos that advertise all types of eye- and face-related products. These can include:
- Glasses
- Contacts
- Eye drops
- Mascara
- Eye shadow
- Eyeliner
- Makeup brushes
- Fake lashes
- Allergy medication
- Acne medication
- Face masks
- Waxing services
- Cleansers
- Stye salves
Advertising for these products or services can be in the form of still photos, stock imagery, or videos, offering models a wide array of options. The work that eye models do focuses specifically on the eye and the surrounding facial features, like the eyebrows, eyelids, the bridge of the nose, and the upper cheek—but it may also include the entire face or whole body.
What is the eye modeling industry like?
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, modeling in general is expected to have little to no change over the next 10 years. This is slower than average growth across industries, which means that it’s competitive—but that’s true for all types of professionals in the public eye.

1. Assess your features.
Before you dive into a highly competitive world, make sure that your eyes are up to the task. Are they a unique color? Are they clear and bright, without being bloodshot? Are they framed by luscious lashes? Is the skin around your eyes blemish-free? Use a magnifying mirror to get a good look at your eyes, and assess them as objectively as possible.
2. Practice eye expressions and poses.
Eye models must master the art of facial expressions, conveying emotion and personality with only their eyes and upper-face features. You can achieve this by practicing different emotions in the mirror so that you can summon feelings like joy, fear, sadness, anger, and so on in an instant for an audition or a job.
3. Develop your portfolio.
Ensure that your eye modeling portfolio showcases a wide array of styles and expressions that you can use to showcase your abilities. Choose photographs from different angles, and make sure to include close-ups of each eye, both with and without eye makeup, so that potential employers can see you clearly. And before you get your photos taken, make sure to get your eyebrows done.
4. Maintain eye health and appearance.
In order to get consistent work as an eye model, you’ll need to nurture your eyes and the surrounding area. This means that you must:
- Get enough sleep every night (at least 7–9 hours) to avoid dark circles.
- Hydrate by drinking 48–64 ounces of water per day.
- Attend regular checkups at the optometrist to ensure the ongoing health of your eyes.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can cause eye irritation or discoloration.
- Don’t use any makeup that irritates your skin.
- Limit your screen time to prevent strain.
- Wear sunglasses and sunscreen with UV protection whenever you go outside.
5. Use social media.
Promote yourself as an eye model across social media, particularly on aesthetic-focused platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Try out different makeup looks, lighting, and expressions, and use eye modeling hashtags such as #eyemodel and #eyepictures to get your content seen.
6. Gain experience.
Search for eye model jobs on our comprehensive modeling jobs database to continue building your résumé and portfolio. Network with brands that you love, and be on the lookout to make sure that you are up-to-date on the latest developments in your industry.
7. Find representation.
