Newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishan has very large shoes to fill. The Canadian actor has been cast to lead Mindy Kaling’s upcoming semi-autobiographical series, which is en route to Netflix.
The still-untitled episodic found its eventual star through a worldwide open casting call (which we told you about right here on Backstage!); Ramakrishan, a Toronto native, was selected from more than 15,000 responses. The series, from Kaling as well as Lang Fisher and Universal TV, will mark the actor’s on-camera debut.
Co-created, co-written, and co-executive-produced by Kaling and Fisher, the comedy has not yet set a premiere date. We do know the 10-episode season will follow a somewhat fictionalized version of Kaling’s actual high school self—set in present day—who is navigating her sophomore year as a first generation Indian American teenager.
More casting is to come—and, hopefully, more casting opportunities, too. Greenstein/Daniel casting is on the job as the series is set to start shooting this month.
