Fans of the 2018 wedding rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians” will want to celebrate this: A new show inspired by the adapted movie and novel is in development at Max. Although hardly any details about the project have been released (including potential cast members or filming locations), several major members of the movie’s original crew have already signed on for production. Here’s the rundown of what we know so far.

Like the movie, the “Crazy Rich Asians” TV show will be based on the same novel by author Kevin Kwan. Chinese-American protagonist Rachel Chu travels to Singapore for a wedding with her boyfriend, Nick Young. Upon meeting his parents and extended family, Rachel realizes they’re all extremely wealthy—and that they’re entirely skeptical of her relationship with Nick. With introductions off to a rocky start, Rachel must win the approval of Nick’s relatives before he can propose, or else she runs the risk of forcing him to choose between her or them.
We’ll have to wait and see how much of the show’s plot will overlap with the movie. But since the TV project isn’t confined to a two-hour runtime like the film, there are more opportunities to hopefully see a deeper dive into the characters’ backgrounds and expanded storylines from the book.
Per Deadline, the Max series is being developed by several “Crazy Rich Asians” movie alumni, led by Adele Lim, who serves as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Lim was a co-writer for the 2018 film in partnership with Peter Chiarelli (“The Proposal,” “Now You See Me 2”). Jon M. Chu, who directed the movie, is an executive producer on the show with Lim and Kwan, whose trilogy of books inspired the entire franchise. The box-office hit starred a memorable cast, including Gemma Chan, Henry Golding, Constance Wu, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh. Still, there’s no word yet on whether any of the actors will return for the upcoming show.
