Dust off your seashell necklaces and bring back your teal blue crimped hair, because “Aquamarine” is back! Disney+ and Disney Channel have ordered a pilot for a brand-new “Aquamarine” sequel TV series with rising star Kenzi Richardson set to lead the next generation of mermaid magic.
Nostalgia is swirling around the project as two original cast members have already been confirmed. In a big win for “Aquamarine” fans, Emma Roberts and Jake McDorman are locked in to executive produce and reprise their roles. Roberts will return as Claire Brown, while McDorman will once again play everyone’s favorite lifeguard, Raymond.
Based on Alice Hoffman’s bestselling novel of the same name, the original film follows a mermaid (Sara Paxton) who washes ashore and changes the lives of two teenage girls (Emma Roberts and Joanna “JoJo” Levesque). While it earned a modest $18.5 million domestically during its initial release, “Aquamarine” has since cemented itself as a Y2K cult favorite, even finding a second life on TikTok.

According to Deadline, the TV series will follow Coral (Richardson), the teenage daughter of Raymond (McDorman) and Aquamarine. After moving to a seaside town, she searches for answers about her mother and learns she is half-mermaid. As her new powers emerge, Coral faces the challenges of growing up, discovering her identity, and trying to understand the mother she never knew.
The confirmed cast includes:
- Kenzi Richardson as Coral
- Jake McDorman as Raymond
- Emma Roberts as Claire Brown
- Briella Guiza as Mia
- Theodore Dalton as August
- Annika Reese as Paige
So far, McDorman and Roberts are the only original cast members confirmed to return.
For Roberts, returning to play Claire was more emotional than she expected. “I’m so excited to bring Claire back to life as a grown-up,” Roberts said. “I remember when I read the pilot, I literally got choked up. I didn’t think I would have such an emotional reaction to it, but I definitely got a little teary-eyed.”
McDorman said his feelings about the film have grown stronger over time. “If we’re looking at how my relationship with the role in the movie’s grown since 2005, which is when we shot it, it’s only grown more affectionate and more grateful and more happy to be involved,” he said.
Sarah Watson, creator of “The Bold Type,” wrote the pilot and is an executive producer. She recently worked on Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” and previously co-created the CBS medical drama “Pure Genius.”
Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who directed the original “Aquamarine,” is back to direct and executive produce the pilot. Her directing credits include episodes of “Dead to Me,” “Gossip Girl,” “The Vampire Diaries,” and “Ginny & Georgia.” Susan Cartsonis, a producer on the 2006 film, is also executive producing alongside Roberts and McDorman.
