With 42 seasons and more than 500 episodes, “The Challenge” has become one of TV’s most enduring reality competition shows. Developed in the late ’90s as a spinoff of “The Real World” and “Road Rules,” the series combines strategic thinking, physical endurance, and interpersonal drama as contestants compete for a cash prize.
The franchise has also sparked real-life romances and long-term relationships, spinoffs, specials, documentaries, and international adaptations.
After airing on MTV since its 1998 debut, the flagship series is moving exclusively to Paramount+ for its 42nd season. “The Challenge: Cutthroat” premiered Aug. 5, with new episodes streaming weekly.

Since its debut in 1998, each season has followed a different theme, which shapes everything from the location and cast to the episode format and gameplay style. Past themes have included “Battle of the Sexes” (Season 6), “Rivals” (Season 21), “Double Agents” (Season 36), and “Battle of the Eras” (Season 40).
Season 42 revisits the “Cutthroat” theme, which was previously used for Season 20 in 2010. Filmed in Thailand, the new installment features 24 veterans and newcomers competing for a share of a $500,000 prize.
The contestants compete on three teams, and to win prize money, teammates must cross the finish line together. However, the winning team’s captain ultimately decides how to divide the prize money—or whether to keep it all.
Contestants live together in isolation while competing in a series of high-stakes missions and challenges.
The cast varies by season depending on the theme. Most contestants are returning veterans of the series or alumni of other reality TV competitions, including “Survivor,” “Big Brother,” “The Amazing Race,” and “Love Island.”

Created by Mary-Ellis Bunim and Jonathan Murray, the duo behind MTV’s “The Real World” and “Road Rules,” the series has worked with a rotating roster of producers, directors, and casting directors throughout its nearly three-decade run.
The series is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions. Julie Pizzi, Justin Booth, and Jacob Lane serve as executive producers. Diego Amson, Brad Tiemann, and Joe Awgul are co-executive producers. Margaret Morales is the supervising producer, and Benjamin Hurvitz and Melissa Tallerine executive produce for MTV.

MTV previously held casting calls for “The Challenge” at Spartan Races, but the franchise now primarily recruits contestants from other reality series rather than through open auditions.
