With over 6 million copies sold and a sprawling universe that includes hits like “The Hawthorne Legacy” and the 2025 release “The Same Backward as Forward,” the series is a cornerstone of modern YA mystery. Barnes, who published her first novel at just 19 and has since authored over 20 books, joins the project as a producer.

According to Deadline, the scripted series follows Avery Grambs, a teenager with a clear plan for her future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. Her life takes an unexpected turn when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves her virtually his entire fortune. There’s just one problem: Avery has no idea why, or even who Hawthorne is.
