We’ve got good news for MCU fans. Dakota Johnson is officially joining the Sony-Marvel web as Madame Web herself in Sony’s upcoming standalone film. Here’s what we know about this new casting announcement.
Dakota Johnson Confirms She Will Play Madame Web
According to Deadline, Dakota Johnson has been cast as Madame Web in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters and will reportedly star in the studio’s next standalone film centering on the character. The studio has not officially announced the casting, but Johnson confirmed via her Instagram stories over the weekend. This would be the first modern comic book adaptation lead by a female character in the title role for Sony, as Deadline notes. S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones,” “The Defenders”) will direct the film with Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (“Morbius”) writing the screenplay. No further casting has been announced at this time, but it wouldn’t be surprising to expect some form of Tom Holland Spider-Man crossover. Veteran Marvel casting director Sarah Finn has been handling both the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures-Marvel projects. So, we expect her to handle the casting here, as well.
