Disney+ and Marvel’s “Hawkeye” spinoff “Echo” is now in production. “Better Call Saul” writer Marion Dayre is the head writer on the new series, with “Reservation Dogs” director Sydney Freeland signed on to helm at least the first episode. The project also stars Alaqua Cox, who became the first disabled female actor to play a titular leading character in a Marvel Studios production with the confirmation of the spinoff. Want to learn more about the upcoming series—and how you can land a background role on the show? Here’s everything you need to know.
“Echo” Is Filming in Atlanta
You heard right: the “Hawkeye” spinoff “Echo,” starring Alaqua Cox, is filming now in Georgia. Disney+ teased the first photo and confirmed that production for the premiere season of the Echo origin story is underway in Atlanta. The project officially started filming in late April, as evidenced by Cox's Instagram story on April 20. The series will reportedly film in several locations in Georgia—including Atlanta, Peach Tree City, Social Circle, and Grantville.
Cox is reprising her role from “Hawkeye,” in which she starred in five of the six episodes. As always, Marvel and Disney+ are keeping quiet about the details of the series, but per IMDb, “Echo” centers on the origin story of Maya Lopez, “whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.”
When it comes to the spinoff’s casting process, Marvel veteran casting director Sarah Finn is likely returning to her usual position. Devery Jacobs, Zahn McClarnon, Graham Greene, Tantoo Cardinal, Chaske Spencer, and Cody Lightning are also joining the series opposite Cox. And if you fit the bill, you can appear in the series, too. “Echo” is currently casting Native American, First Nations, and Indigenous talent of all ages for background roles in the series as filming continues through September— head over to the casting notice to apply today.
The first episode of “Echo” is due out on Disney+ in 2023, with no official release date announced. As for the status of “Hawkeye,” it’s unclear if the series will return for a Season 2, but after a recent Marvel update, chances look low.
