Netflix is reimagining “Star Search” for the streaming era. After launching the careers of A-list performers in the ’80s and ’90s, the revival of the iconic talent show gives a brand-new generation of hopefuls a chance to compete on a global platform. The reboot comes from Jesse Collins Entertainment, the producers behind the Primetime Emmy Awards, the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and Netflix’s “Rhythm + Flow.” Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) is set to host. “Star Search” premieres live on Netflix Jan. 20, 2026, with new live episodes airing Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET.

What is “Star Search” about?

The original “Star Search,” which aired from 1983 to 1995, gave contestants the chance to compete before judges in various talent categories, including comedy, dance, and singing. Hosted by the legendary TV presenter Ed McMahon, the talent show is famous for launching the careers of many big-name stars, including Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Destiny’s Child, Justin Timberlake, Dave Chappelle, and dozens of others.

Netflix’s reboot will tap into the legacy of the original show while incorporating interactive viewer elements to modernize the format. With episodes airing live each week, performances and eliminations will happen in real time, powered by audience votes and viewers at home. “Knowing that fans from all over the world can cast their votes in real time adds a whole new layer of excitement and participation to the mix,” Anderson told Tudum. “It’s like we’re all part of the show and get to be one of the judges.”

Who is in the cast of “Star Search”?

As of now, Anderson’s hosting gig is the only confirmed casting announcement for Netflix’s “Star Search.” No other details have been released about potential judges or contestants.

Who is producing “Star Search”?

Executive producers include Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon (“Beyoncé Bowl”), Madison Merritt (“Celebrity Squares”), and Elaine Metaxas (“Hollywood Squares”). “America’s Got Talent” alum Jason Raff will serve as showrunner.
