UPDATE: For this year's winner's, head here!
Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards have arrived! Danielle Brooks (“The Color Purple”) and Lewis Pullman (“The Testament of Ann Lee”) announced the contenders for the gold statuette from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Jan. 22.
This year's frontrunner is Ryan Coogler's vampire drama "Sinners," leading the way with 16 nominations, including best director and original screenplay nod for Coogler, Michael B. Jordan in lead actor, Wunmi Mosaku in supporting actress, and Delroy Lindo in supporting actor. This number flies past the record for most nominations in a single year (14), previously held in a three-way tie by "All About Eve," "La La Land," and "Titanic."
Close behind is Paul Thomas Anderson's revolutionary thriller "One Battle After Another" with 13 nominations. Anderson himself added nominations for best director and best adapted screenplay—he came into the day with 11 nominations but no wins so far—while Leonardo DiCaprio scored lead actor, Teyana Taylor landed in supporting actress, and both Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro will compete for supporting actor.
This year's lineup includes the inaugural casting nominees, the first new category since 2001. The nominees are Nina Gold for "Hamnet," Jennifer Venditti for "Marty Supreme," Cassandra Kulukundis for "One Battle After Another," Gabriel Domingues for "The Secret Agent," and Francine Maisler for "Sinners."
The Oscar nominations span the full breadth of filmmaking, honoring the stories that captivated audiences alongside the craftspeople whose work—often invisible but always essential—helped bring those visions to the screen. This year’s ceremony, hosted for the second year in a row by Conan O’Brien, will take place March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in L.A.
