Welcome to Rumorville! Here you can learn about casting news that’s about to break in Hollywood—and today’s news is big for those who love the ’80s! There are rumblings about two classic films that are getting a sequel or remake. These speculations might be only rumors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t follow the trail all the way to the audition room.
Universal Pictures is working on a sequel to this hit ’80s action-comedy.
The hunt is back on for Universal Pictures, which, according to Variety, is working on a sequel to the hit ’80s action-comedy “Midnight Run.” The project is now in development at the studio and will reportedly star multihyphenate Regina Hall, who will also produce under her RH Negative banner. The original 1988 feature, directed by Martin Brest and written by George Gallo, followed “a bounty hunter [who] pursues a former Mafia accountant who is also being chased by a rival bounty hunter, the FBI, and his old mob boss after jumping bail.” Robert De Niro starred opposite Charles Grodin. Plot details and cast members other than Hall are being kept secret for now, including whether De Niro, who is producing, will also star in this new version. Aeysha Carr will write the screenplay.
Two big actors are in talks to star in a remake of “Road House.”
From one ’80s classic to another: First reported by Deadline, Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in and Doug Liman is in talks to direct a remake of 1989’s “Road House.” The original starred the late Patrick Swayze as “a bouncer hired to clean up one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in Missouri, The Double Deuce… and is put to the test when he needs to protect the town from a corrupt businessman.” According to Deadline, MGM has been working on reboot ideas for a while, including as a starring vehicle for Ronda Rousey. (Rousey is currently listed as a producer on the reboot.) It’s unclear how soon this would go into production if it should get off the ground with Gyllenhaal’s ever-busy dance card and Liman in pre-production for “Everest” and the still-rumored “Live Die Repeat and Repeat.” No timeline or further casting has been announced.
