We hope your dad is a theater fan, because this year, Father’s Day falls on Broadway’s biggest night: the 77th Tony Awards!
Adam Rapp and Justin Levine’s musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” took home the ceremony’s top prize, best musical. Directed by Danya Taymor—who also grabbed the Tony for best director of a musical—”The Outsiders” ended the night with four wins, tying this season’s revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.”
Both shows came in behind “Stereophonic,” David Adjmi’s hit play set inside a recording studio in 1976, which nabbed five Tonys on 13 nominations. This includes wins for best play, best director of a play for Daniel Aukin, best performance by an actor in a featured role in a play for Will Brill, best scenic design for David Zinn, and best sound design for Ryan Rumery.
"It's really hard to make a career in the arts. We need to fund the arts in America,” Adjmi said, accepting the statue for best play. “It is the hallmark of a civilized society."
Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony for his performance in “Merrily We Roll Along” as Charley Kringas. “I will never have it this good again,” the actor noted in his acceptance speech, referring to his creative partnership with co-stars Lindsay Mendez and Jonathan Groff. Later, Groff won—also his first, after two prior nominations—for best actor in a leading role in a musical.
"I used to record the Tony Awards on a VHS tape and watch it over and over again," Groff said, accepting the award. "To actually be able to be part of it, to watch the work of this incredible community has been the greatest gift and pleasure of my life."
Other first-time winners include Sarah Paulson (“Appropriate”) for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play, Maleah Joi Moon (“Hell’s Kitchen”) for best performance by an actress in a leading role in a musical, and Kara Young (“Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch”) for best actress in a featured role in a play.
