A sequel to the box office smash 2019 thriller “Joker” is apparently in the works. Last week, director Todd Phillips revealed that a script has been written and Joaquin Phoenix is expected to star in the upcoming project. Want to learn more about this exciting news as well as casting opportunities? We have the inside scoop below.
A “Joker” Sequel Is in the Works
While a deal for a sequel to 2019’s “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, hasn’t been officially inked, it looks like there is at least one on the table. In a recent Instagram post, director Todd Phillips shared a photo of a sequel script, which he wrote Scott Silver, titled "Folie à Deux." The Instagram post is also accompanied by a second photo of Phoenix reading the said script.
Phoenix portrayed the murderous Arthur Fleck, a.k.a. Joker, in the DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. origin story, which followed “a mentally troubled stand-up comedian [as he embarks] on a downward spiral that leads to the creation of an iconic villain.” The 2019 film, written by Phillips and Silver, was a major box office hit—garnering over $1 billion since its release. It’s now the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. The film also led the year’s Academy Award nominations and took home prizes for Phoenix for Best Actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir for Best Original Score.
While “Folie à Deux” hasn’t officially been given the go-ahead yet, it’s all but inevitable with both the presence of a script and Phoenix’s interest. So, for those interested in joining a project like the “Joker,” it’s a good idea to update your resume with similar gigs. From thrillers to superhero roles, these projects are casting talent now.
As for who may cast the upcoming sequel, Shayna Markowitz was the casting director for “Joker” and will presumably return if the sequel gets made.
